“The Midnight Kites offer a refreshing dose of real musicianship, coupled with insightful lyrics reflecting many facets of the human condition.  Best of all, they sound more like themselves than they sound like anyone else... their original music is very original.  If you appreciate contemporary folk, alternative country and/or intelligent indie pop, I think you’ll like The Midnight Kites.”

~Deborah Nichols, Program Director, KRZA

The Color Of Light presents a consistent sound full of energy and life, and a sound driven as much by the spaces between notes as the notes themselves. This is a thrilling debut. I, for one, can not wait to hear what comes next.   ...you have a glorious crossroads where Rock, Pop, Country and Folk meet. Jill McDougall's sweet alto voice and mellow demeanor will recall for listeners Margo Timmins (Cowboy Junkies) or even Natalie Merchant in her early days with 10,000 Maniacs.

About The Color of Light

The making of The Color of Light happened much more quickly than we ever imagined. We knew we had some desire to create a record, but had no idea how or when it would actually happen. A chance meeting with Jen, the drummer on the album, got the ball rolling and had us in the studio the very next week! We feel that this album is a reflection of the art of allowing; going with the flow, and embracing life’s opportunities. The album is dedicated in loving memory of Katie Wise Friedman, a friend of our family’s who inspired others to live life to the fullest.

Song Stories

Green Eyes: Lyrics written on a trip to the San Luis Valley by Bruce shortly after he and Jill got married. Originally had a totally different melody, but evolved over a couple of years to what it is now.

Falling is Healing: Bruce wrote lyrics and rough melody years ago...we revived and revitalized it. 3. Green Island: Music & Lyrics by Jill, created in the spring of 2009.

My One Wish: During rehearsal one night, Connor was messing around with an original bass line; Bruce came in with guitar, Jill added melody and lyrics; encourages living life to the fullest.

Caution to the Wind: Written immediately after My One Wish, the same evening; Bruce’s guitar idea turned into this haunting reflection of self-discovery and moving beyond limitations.

The Color of Light: Once a slow, pretty melody, this song turned into a fast paced pop song the night before we recorded it in the studio! Lyrics were created over time and were inspired by some of Jill & Bruce’s experiences, also general themes people go through in the course of a lifetime.

Landslide: Always a favorite of Jill’s; Stevie Nicks wrote this while living in Aspen, Colorado in the 1970’s.

Storybook: Words and music by Jill; originally a quiet folk song, this turned into a rock ballad with full Hammond B3 organ in the studio! Each verse provides a glimpse into three individual stories.

Coyote: A story about getting away from the chaos of the big city and finding freedom. Lyrics written by Bruce years ago on a road trip.

Sungate: Dealing with heavier subject matter, this song was created after Bruce & Jill attended a fundraising event for the non-profit organization Sungate Kids in Denver. This organization provides services for childhood vicitms of abuse. Learn more at http:/www.sungatekids.org.

Swimming Naked: The first song Jill & Bruce co-wrote; actually written while Jill was working on an abstract painting.
